Romantic getaways for a long weekend

Lake Como Italy

Here are some ideas for traveling in Europe with your partner. So all you have to do is choose, make reservations and enjoy a great trip.

You can take advantage of the idea for an anniversary, birthday, or just because (which is when it’s coolest).

About costs and flight links and hotels tell you that in the case of the flight, I put the cheapest direct flight round trip for two people or if it has a stopover, it is not crazy long.

The price is from the time of writing the article; it may be different when you look at it. Also, the price can be different depending on the time of departure, the airport, the city, etc.

In the case of hotels, I give you a range because it depends on your preference. I will also leave you with the two best options I have found, although I recommend that you take a good look and see for yourself.

20 Romantic Getaways for Traveling as a Couple

Paris, The City of Love

Pont Alexander III Paris
Paris Eiffel Tower

Paris is known as the city of love, so it is the romantic destination par excellence.

We have visited it many times, we fell in love with it so much, that now we live here… And the truth is that it is a special city to travel with your partner.

Start with a walk at the Trocadero and discover the views of Paris and the Eiffel Tower from this point, then continue along the banks of the Seine and stroll along the Ile des Swans to the replica of the Statue of Liberty.

To get to the Eiffel Tower, I recommend you either get off at Trocadero metro station or get on line 6 and go through Bir Hakeim (this station is closed until February 2024, but you can still enjoy the view of the tower).

Climb the Eiffel Tower and then walk along the Champ de Mars, the Invalides and the Champs Elysées, which they call “the most beautiful avenue in the world.” a bit pretentious, isn’t it? But it’s very pretty, I’m not taking that away.

Climb the Arc de Triomphe, stroll through Montmartre and the painters’ quarter, sit on the steps of the Sacre Coeur while street bands play music, and observe the Paris as seen by Van Gogh, Matisse, Touluse-Lautrec or Renoir.

Of course, I will recommend you to visit the Île de la Cité, even if you do not enter the monuments, but it is a nice walk that culminates in Notre Dame.

Beautiful square dominated by the facade of the cathedral that inspired Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, and from there you dine in the Latin Quarter where, despite its name you will find many French restaurants, but very picturesque and pleasant.

If you are traveling in winter, read the post about the Christmas markets in Europe. You will love it!

In addition, you will be able to visit the beautiful city center.

You can also take a boat ride on the Douro River, and if you want, very close to Oporto, you have a lot of villages and places to visit, some of them declared World Heritage by UNESCO.

You can visit some of the wine cellars whose name this city gets and which is famous all over the world. You can ride on Porto’s famous streetcars and visit the highest parts of the city.

Rome, a getaway to the Eternal City

Valentine's Day Romantic Getaways

If I start writing about a romantic getaway and I don’t write about Rome it seems to me that I would leave an incomplete article.

Rome is, for me, the city of eternal surprises; every time I go there I discover new things and new monuments and places.

What this city has to offer in terms of possibilities and places to visit and get to know is absolutely impressive. But you can’t miss the Colosseum and its surroundings, including, of course, the Roman Forum.

At the other end of the forum is Piazza Venezia, and you are already approaching the center where Piazza Navona and the Pantheon of Agrippa are located.

From here, you can walk to the Trevi Fountain, which is finally restored, and end up in Piazza de Spagna and its famous staircase. If you want to go shopping, this is your place.

In the evening, you can walk along the banks of the Tiber from Castel Sant Angelo to the Fiume Tevere (half an hour) and enjoy and observe the beautiful night views of the city to end up in Trastevere, the neighborhood of love in Rome.

You will find many places and restaurants to dine with your partner and enjoy the moment alone and quiet.

Then if you want, you can walk to Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, where the basilica is one of the important monuments of this beautiful neighborhood.

Florence, The City of Art

Florence, ponte vecchio at sunset

In this post, you will notice that I have some love for Italy; I can’t help it! It seems to me a beautiful country with charming and peculiar people. How could I not recommend Florence for a romantic getaway?

Florence is a special city, and its inhabitants, the Florentine, are by definition friendly and very accustomed to tourists, aware of how important it is for them.

Florence is a city where art is in the street, you don’t need to enter a museum to see real wonders, although if you decide to enter the Uffizi or the Accademia Gallery, you won’t regret it.

Florence is a city to walk around without haste, paying attention to everything because every detail will transport you to another time. It is really easy in this city to imagine how things were in another era, because sometimes it seems that nothing has changed.

If you want to get an idea of what Florence is like, from a general point of view, the best point is Piazza Michelangelo. From there, you can walk to the center because Florence is not very big, really.

views of Florence from the Piazzale Michelangelo

You will cross the Ponte Vecchio, which has houses and stores. Take your time in Piazza della Signoria from where you can admire the detail of Palazzo Vecchio and where you can get close and see the replica of Michelangelo’s David in the middle of the street!

In addition to the Perseus with the head of Medusa or the Rape of the Sabine Women, some of them original.

Visit the Piazza della Repubblica on your way to the cathedral of Florence, which, for me, is the most beautiful in Italy. You can if you want to climb the Campanille but be prepared for climb the steps.

If you are there admiring the cathedral’s facade, turn around and look at the door of the Baptistery, it is a real work of art.

You can go for dinner with your partner to any of the countless restaurants in Florence and try the Bistec a la fiorentina, delicious.

Madrid, stroll and dinner in traditional Madrid

Madrid, Puerta del Sol, Free Tour

Madrid, besides being the capital of Spain, is a magnificent destination for a romantic getaway, even if you are from Madrid!

If you are from Madrid, my recommendation is a rural cottage in any part of the “Sierra Norte” or Northwest of Madrid to get lost and enjoy a special weekend with your partner and you can also go to dinner at any of the excellent restaurants that you will find in that area, which are numerous.

If you feel like going out for dinner in Madrid, there is so much to choose from that it’s overwhelming. But do not miss a walk through the Madrid de los Austrias, from Cibeles up the Gran Via to Puerta del Sol.

From the Puerta del Sol you can walk along the Calle Mayor to the Plaza Mayor and from there down to the Plaza de Oriente you can enjoy the views of Madrid from the Royal Palace and go back up to the Puerta del Sol by Arenal.

Going up Arenal and very close to the Puerta del Sol is the chocolate shop San Ginés, if it is cold, it will suit you perfectly.

It is not an excessively long walk, but take your time; you will enjoy it.

For dinner, you have very close to the Huertas neighborhood, with plenty of restaurants with a very varied offers.

Recommendations in Madrid:

Venice, Queen of the Adriatic

Valentine's Day Romantic Getaways
Venice

Well, I was telling you that my fondness for Italy was going to be noticeable in this post…. Venice is the city par excellence for lovers.

I remember the first time I went to Venice 12 years ago, and I went alone because I was going to meet a friend a little further down in Rome.

I was there for only one night, but I will never forget the fact that I only saw couples, couples everywhere, couples kissing, couples strolling, having dinner, chatting or dancing in Piazza San Marco.

Venice is a city to get to know on foot and without haste. If this time you decide to go to Venice, don’t try to get to know it in depth because it will be impossible. Rather, try to enjoy the city calmly, as if it were not about you.

Of course there are things one must see and do in Venice.

The first thing you’ll think is to take a ride on the Gondola; well, okay, I accept it as a topical cliché, but nothing more.

Valentine's Day Romantic Getaways
St. Mark’s Square

Venice is a conglomerate of islands in the Adriatic, the only thing that connects this conglomerate of islands with the mainland is an elevated bridge over which runs a railway and a road.

You can stay in Venice itself or you can stay in Venice Mestre which is inland but allows you to reach Venice by train in a matter of 15 minutes.

Already in Venice, it is difficult to recommend you what to see, you have to see it all, but for sure you have to be in Piazza San Marco, which is the nerve center of Venice and where there is also the famous Basilica of San Marco and very close to the Bridge of Sighs.

From there, crossing Per San Marco or following the course of the Grand Canal inland, you will reach the Rialto Bridge, a bridge that deserves a contemplative break.

It was not only a bridge, but it was also one of Venice’s main centers of commerce and an architectural masterpiece by Antonio da Ponte.
