Do you plan trips around long weekends? Picking the city is only half the equation \u2014 picking the season<\/em> is what actually makes or breaks the trip. The same city can be magic or miserable depending on when you go. Here are 15 European cities perfect for a 4-day-plus escape, with the best time of year to visit each one, based on my own travels \u2014 I’ve been to all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinburgh: What to See in a Weekend<\/h3>\n\n\n

\ud83d\udcc5 Best time to go:<\/strong> August (for the Fringe Festival) or late December (for Hogmanay). If you’d rather skip the crowds, spring (April-May) is a great call too \u2014 good weather without the summer rush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinburgh<\/strong><\/a> is a city I fell for completely, and it’s perfect for a long weekend or a few extra days. Scotland’s capital has it all: history, tradition, festivals, culture, and pubs made for live music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s a great destination year-round \u2014 go in August for the Fringe, or ring in the New Year with Hogmanay, Edinburgh’s biggest winter celebration, rooted in Viking traditions of celebrating the winter solstice in style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to stay?<\/strong> We stayed at the Hotel Britania<\/a><\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s pretty good if you\u2019re driving, since they have free parking, but if that\u2019s not the case for you, it\u2019s a bit far to walk, although you can get to the center in 20 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Athens: What to See Over a Long Weekend<\/h3>\n\n\n

\ud83d\udcc5 Best time to go:<\/strong> spring (April-June) or fall (September-October). You’ll skip the brutal heat and the crowds of summer, and the Acropolis is far more enjoyable to explore in cooler light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Athens is usually thought of as a summer destination, but for me spring and fall are the sweet spot: less heat, fewer crowds, and lower prices than peak season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’ve got a weekend, a long weekend, or four days to spare, this is a destination that has to be on your list. Visiting the Acropolis, walking through the Parthenon \u2014 it’s a dream trip for a reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to Stay?<\/strong> Here you can stay in the city center; depending on how long you\u2019re staying, you can rent an apartment or stay at a hotel\u2014there are prices to suit every budget. The Ilissos Hotel<\/a><\/strong> offers great value for the money.

Dublin: Things to Do on a Weekend<\/h3>\n\n\n

\ud83d\udcc5 Best time to go:<\/strong> late spring (May-June), when the days are long, the weather is at its most reliable, and the street (and pub) energy is at its best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ireland’s capital<\/strong><\/a> is a city full of life \u2014 the second the sun comes out, everyone’s outside; if not, you’ll find them in the pubs. Dubliners are social people who genuinely know how to have a good time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s plenty to see and do in Dublin, and the best part is that most of it is walkable. You can even stroll to the Guinness Storehouse, and Temple Bar and the Long Room at Trinity College are absolute musts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to stay?<\/strong> We stayed in the city center at the Blooms Hotel<\/a><\/strong>. Honestly, what you\u2019re paying for here is the location\u2014you\u2019re right in the heart of Temple Bar\u2014because otherwise, the hotel is just average, and there\u2019s a nightclub downstairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prague<\/h3>\n\n\n

\ud83d\udcc5 Best time to go:<\/strong> fall (September-November) or winter, especially around Christmas for the markets. Fewer tourists than summer, and cold enough to enjoy a proper Czech beer at a relaxed pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prague, the City of a Hundred Spires, has a special charm and feels incredibly romantic to me. There are plenty of reasons to visit \u2014 even with all the tourists!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Old Town Square is one of the most iconic images of the Czech capital: the astronomical clock, the castle, the winding streets, not to mention the beer, the food, and that panoramic view at dusk from up high. Absolutely worth seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to Stay?<\/strong> In Prague, you can find very affordable accommodations right in the heart of the city; the Salvator Boutique Hotel comes highly recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott Prague City<\/a><\/strong>. It’s pretty cool, with spacious rooms and right next to the metro. It’s a bit of a walk from downtown, but only three metro stops away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also stayed at the Clement Hotel<\/a><\/strong>\u2014it’s not the Marriott, but it’s right next to downtown. You can walk everywhere from there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amsterdam<\/h3>\n\n\n

\ud83d\udcc5 Best time to go:<\/strong> spring (March-May), especially April, when the tulips are in bloom and the canals are at their most beautiful. Summer gets seriously crowded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amsterdam<\/strong><\/a> is another fantastic city for a long weekend or a 3-4 day escape. It has everything \u2014 culture, nightlife, canals, activities for every taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can’t leave Amsterdam without a canal walk or a bike ride, a visit to a museum like the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum, and a wander through the Red Light District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to Stay? We stayed at Hotel2Stay<\/a><\/strong>; the rooms have a kitchenette, the beds are super comfortable, but it\u2019s a little far from downtown. If you rent a bike, it\u2019s about a 20-minute ride, and it\u2019s just one stop from the central station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udcc5 Best time to go:<\/strong> spring (April-May) or fall (September-October). Pleasant temperatures for walking for hours, and noticeably shorter lines and less heat than peak summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Eternal City<\/strong><\/a> will always be on my list of cities to revisit. I’ve been several times already and I still want to go back. I never get tired of the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, or wandering through Trastevere with a proper Italian gelato in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to stay?<\/strong> In Rome, we stayed right next to the Piazza Venezia<\/a><\/strong>. It\u2019s a bit pricey, but the location is unbeatable\u2014you\u2019ll save on almost all transportation costs because you can walk everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
