We were <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/zalipie-poland-l104943\/from-krakow-guided-tour-of-zalipie-t368031\/?partner_id=HBKRMW4&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;placement=content-middle&amp;cmp=ZalipieTarnow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">waiting for the car<\/a><\/strong> that would take us to our first destination on the route we had for today, Zalipie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, we have yet to look for information about it. We did not know where we were going or what we would see. We had been told that it was worth it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we spent the rest of the morning and afternoon in a medieval town called Tarn\u00f3w.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/heymondo.com\/?utm_medium=Afiliado&amp;utm_source=TOURISTEAREN&amp;utm_campaign=PRINCIPAL&amp;cod_descuento=TOURISTEAREN&amp;ag_campaign=ZalipieTarnoweng&amp;agencia=07e4c1232d960e8b1788d15ac52a7faf05c1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\"><strong>Get 5% off Your Travel Insurance<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zalipie And The Painted Houses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We were <a href=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/en\/7-days-poland-itinerary\/\"><strong>visiting Poland<\/strong><\/a> last December when we had just <strong>come from Warsaw<\/strong>, a modern city steeped in the history we all know. We had also visited <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/en\/best-krakow-itinerary\/\">Krakow<\/a><\/strong>, and we had already toured <a href=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/en\/visit-auschwitz-birkenau\/\"><strong>Auschwitz<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our spirits had dropped a bit, to tell the truth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of our own free will, we decided to visit places that inevitably make us reflect and sometimes lose faith in human beings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Undoubtedly, it was one of those moments when one needs a little joy, not too much, just the right amount.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Carretera-Congelada.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Carretera-Congelada.jpg 800w, https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Carretera-Congelada-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>When we arrived in Zalipie, we found <strong>a village of scattered houses<\/strong>. It is not a typical village as we are used to where the houses are crowded around a square and the church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here the houses are far apart from each other. We stop on a frozen dirt road in front of Felicja Curylo&#8217;s museum house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zalipie&#8217;s Felicja Curylo&#8217;s House-Museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Zalipie, you have to see the painted houses. There are many, but surely the most important is the house of Felicja Curylo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, this woman did not come up with the idea of painting the houses this way. It had already been done since the 18th century, but <strong>she was the one who made this type of art and custom known beyond the local area. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The custom of painting houses was born in the interior of the houses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can attest to how cold it gets in winter in these places, so the fireplace was one of the most important parts of the house. In the beginning, it would be like a border or something similar. While the <strong>walls and fireplace are very brightly colored<\/strong>, the ceiling decoration is monochromatic paint. It is black and white. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to her granddaughters and great-granddaughters, it was through the ceiling that Felicja began to paint. Right in front of it, there is another house that is also beautiful, tastefully decorated, and fantastically well-painted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost every wall is a work of art that we can help to snap as many photos as possible. I must say, Pawel, our excellent guide, decided that we had to go to the cultural house in Zalipie and meet the women painters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had no idea where we were going, and we did not lose anything by going.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Casa-Cultura.jpg\" alt=\"Zalipie House of Culture\" class=\"wp-image-8333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Casa-Cultura.jpg 800w, https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Casa-Cultura-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It almost seemed that they were more embarrassed about it than we were. They looked at each other sideways and smiled or laughed as we took the occasional half stolen half posed photo. They invited us for hot coffee and left us to observe their work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They paint all kinds of things, vases, handicrafts, and paintings<\/strong>. And it is their way of life, as they sell them to earn money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They had the living room decorated in the style of the area, and I loved the entrance and some of the rooms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Zalipie to Tarnow: Dabrowa Tarnowska and Synagogue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The origin of this city<strong> dates back to the end of the last ice age,<\/strong> although historically, it was not documented until the 15th century. Its name means &#8220;Oak woods near Tarn\u00f3w.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the way from Zalipie to Tarn\u00f3w, we decided to stop to visit the synagogue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a museum of the Jewish reality and its history and customs, although, as we had already been told, there are almost no Jews left in Poland. There is also a multitude of objects and souvenirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Medieval City of Tarn\u00f3w<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have wanted to write about Tarn\u00f3w for a long time. I love the city. Do not expect great things, monuments, or churches because you will not find them here, although they have their particularities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I did find the quiet city that preserves its identity and history, and the people are particularly friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Town Square and the Town Hall Tower<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is considered <strong>one of the smallest in Poland<\/strong>, but it is still stunning. It is simple, sober, and has the town hall tower in the center. It is from the 15th century and is now a museum. We had the opportunity to enter and visit it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see paintings, jewelry, details, documents, and weapons of the history of this city.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Plaza.jpg\" alt=\"Zalipie Tarnow Plaza\" class=\"wp-image-8337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Plaza.jpg 800w, https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Plaza-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>We were also able to<strong> dress up in costumes<\/strong>! The houses surrounding the square are from the Renaissance period. Inside are the most significant <strong>sculpted funeral monuments <\/strong>in Poland. They correspond to the Tarnowski and Ostrogski families, facing each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the outside of the basilica, you can see a sculpture of Pope John Paul II.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Basilica.jpg\" alt=\"Zalipie Tarnow Basilica\" class=\"wp-image-8339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Basilica.jpg 800w, https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Basilica-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mijotajowski House<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Right before the Tarn\u00f3w Cathedral is the Mijotajowski House, the <strong>oldest house in the city<\/strong> and dates back to 1524. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was built using the wall erected by Herman Tarnowski, using it as one of the house&#8217;s walls. Today, it is the diocesan museum.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Casa-Mijotajowski.jpg\" alt=\"Zalipie Tarnow Mijotajowski House\" class=\"wp-image-8340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Casa-Mijotajowski.jpg 800w, https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Casa-Mijotajowski-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bimah Remains of the Synagogue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This monument is a remnant of the city&#8217;s synagogue left standing by the Germans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Ethnographic Museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a<strong> museum dedicated to gypsy culture and history<\/strong> in Poland. It is a relatively small museum dedicated exclusively to this society that spread throughout Europe, from Romania to the Netherlands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see their culture and traditions, how they used to dress, and what some of their ceremonies are like. It caught my attention because the tombstones are piled up and disorderly. Because the <strong>Germans used them to pave the streets<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They subsequently retrieved them and placed them as best they could. I was very struck by the lack of humanity required to treat the memory of the deceased in this way.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Cementerio.jpg\" alt=\"Zalipie Tarnow Cemetery\" class=\"wp-image-8342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Cementerio.jpg 800w, https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Zalipie-Tarnow-Cementerio-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It was getting dark and snowing heavily, so we had to start our way back to Krakow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We made good use of the day by visiting Zalipie and Tarn\u00f3w, two fascinating visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Get to Zalipie and Tarnow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/city\/pl\/krakow.html?aid=910006&amp;label=ZalipieTarnoweng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\"><strong>book a hotel in Krakow<\/strong><\/a>, so going to Tarnow can take time and effort. So most people travel via a day tour with pick up from the hotel. Here are some ways to travel between these two beautiful places, like the locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bus to Zalipie and Tarnow<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can reach Tarnow via bus ride from Krakow. You can buy a bus ticket from Krakow bus station to Tarnow <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqzyfj.com\/click-7600695-13519809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">here for only 5 \u20ac<\/a><\/strong>. But to go to Zalipie, you must ride the Euro Plawecki Trans Bus from Tarnow to Bieniaszowice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plawecki.org\/s-zamow-bilet-online,18.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">buy bus tickets to Bieniaszowice<\/a><\/strong> and check their <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plawecki.org\/s-tarnow-greboszow-bieniaszowice,4,12.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bus schedules<\/a><\/strong> online. Their website is not in English so it can be tricky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zalipie and Tarnow Day Trips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to go to Zalipie and Tarnow is through day trips or tours. Most guided tours come with a pick up from your hotel option to save you from going through booking transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Krakow: Zalipie &amp; Tarnow Tour<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This tour takes you to Zalipie and Tarnow and two more places in Poland: Malopolska and Bochnia. The tour includes an English tour guide and pick up from Krakow.
