In those times, it was a significant town in the area, mainly due to its location and defense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, during the war of Castilian succession between Isabella the Catholic and Beltraneja, the people of Alarc\u00f3n sided with Beltraneja, who was the loser. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, Alarc\u00f3n lost its position in the Kingdom but retained all its monumental wealth and art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the things that surprised us in Alarc\u00f3n is the tranquility and cleanliness of its streets; you don&#8217;t see a single cigarette butt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best Things To Do in Alarcon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You have two options: take panoramic photos when you arrive or when you leave, I prefer to take them when you arrive, but that&#8217;s how you want it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you can leave the car in the town square, where the town hall and the Old Church of San Juan Bautista are located, where the Jes\u00fas Mateos mural painting art center is (a must-visit), and do the whole tour on foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Mateos Mural Painting Art Center<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Formerly it was the Church of San Juan Bautista, a beautiful building from the 16th century that suffered neglect for centuries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1994 the artist Jes\u00fas Mateo developed, for free and without support, the sketches of what we know today as the Alarc\u00f3n Murals. A non-religious contemporary artwork that reminds you of the Picasso style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It took him six years to finish, and they were sponsored by UNESCO in 1997 and declared an artistic and cultural interest. In 1712 it belonged to the Marquis of Aguilar, who received a report from the master builders insisting on urgent repairs to prevent its collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1720, the castle was ruled by Alejandro de Alarc\u00f3n and Duchess Julia de Alarc\u00f3n, who welcomed many refugees in times of conflict in the country, making them heroes of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Fern\u00e1ndez de Velasco, 15th Duke of Fr\u00edas, sold the castle and &#8220;four or five more turrets&#8221; to Rafael L\u00e1zaro \u00c1lvarez de Torrijos for 20,000 reales on June 5, 1863.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1963, the Minister of Information and Tourism, Manuel Fraga Iribarne, expropriated it from the family of \u00c1lvarez Torrijos Torres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The castle was restored, converted into a Parador hotel, and opened to the public on March 25, 1966.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/alarcon-cuenca-7.jpg\" alt=\"Alarcon, Cuenca, Spain\" class=\"wp-image-35346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/alarcon-cuenca-7.jpg 800w, https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/alarcon-cuenca-7-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/touristear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/alarcon-cuenca-7-725x544.jpg 725w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>According to the Chronicle of the Wise King, in the 12th century, an authentic medieval fortress&#8217;s foundation is attributed to King Alfonso VIII. Later, during the Renaissance, it was reformed by the Infante Don Juan Manuel and, especially, the Marquis of Villena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The castle has a square floor plan, surrounded by a double defensive enclosure, of which the Torre del Homenaje stands out, with a Renaissance appearance, with the tops of the battlements forming an arrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is generally a fortification with an irregular shape of great size, joined by the same stones as the rest of the city wall and fortifications, thus constituting as a whole the base of the entire defensive system of Alarc\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is an important place to see in Alarc\u00f3n, and I recommend you spend one night at the Parador \/ Castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had the opportunity to visit the entire castle, including some of the rooms, and honestly, it is spectacular!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to sleep in this castle, go out on the terrace and be in the tower!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Church of Santa Maria<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It was built in the 16th century on top of a previous Romanesque temple and is the most important temple in Alarc\u00f3n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The church of Santa Mar\u00eda may be the most important monument in Alarcon Village, after the castle. Today it is an exhibition hall and auditorium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not much remains of its Romanesque construction, as it has been remodeled many times over the years. But it is worth visiting it and observing the past remains that have survived to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Guided visits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can visit the small town of Alarc\u00f3n on your own or on a guided tour with a professional guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the <strong>guided tours, <\/strong>the entire historical complex of Alarc\u00f3n, its churches, its castle, and the views from<strong> <\/strong>different viewpoints are visited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visit includes, in addition to the guide, the entrance to the contemporary art center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*Note that Alarcon is a small town that receives mostly Spanish tourism, so if you don&#8217;t understand Spanish, guided tours maybe are not for you. Also, read this and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/touristear.com\/en\/spain\/\">learn some Spanish words<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ruso&#8217;s Museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Russian Museum is a contemporary art gallery located in a part that belonged to the Palacio de Los Casta\u00f1eda. Unfortunately, today only the 16th-century portal has survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is called Ruso&#8217;s museum due to the Russian painter and collector Miguel Ourvantzoff. It is a two-story Renaissance-style building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It currently houses the Alarc\u00f3n Town Hall. On the fa\u00e7ade, you can see the coats of arms of the family of the Marquis of Villena and three gargoyles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Wall of Alarcon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Alarc\u00f3n wall had five access gates to the medieval enclosure. In its time, it had a drawbridge; now, a road passes through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chinchilla Gate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chinchilla gate is another of the gates that gave access to the walled town of Alarc\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowadays, it is also known as Puerta del Picazo. It is part of the Spanish Historical Heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puerta del Bodeg\u00f3n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the door that is under the castle of Alarc\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dungeon Door<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This gate is located in the second enclosure of the wall. It was built in times of the Infante Juan Manuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">River Gate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The River gate gave access to the Henchidero bridge north of the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gates had towers that defended them; among them are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gun Tower<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canavate Tower<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alarconcillos Tower<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dungeon Tower<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Holy Trinity Church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The church of the Holy Trinity in Alarc\u00f3n has a Gothic nave from the 13th century, one of the few preserved in the province of Cuenca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its fa\u00e7ade, the tower, the Gothic nave, and the &#8220;Arco de la Villa&#8221; stand out, an arch that serves as a passageway from the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Viewpoint of the Rock (Mirador de la Pe\u00f1a)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Enjoy magnificent views of Alarcon and the J\u00facar River from the Mirador de la Pe\u00f1a.
